Today, we journey to the vast Shigar Valley via the Katpana Desert, also known as the Cold Desert. Situated at an altitude of 2,226 meters, the Katpana Desert holds the title of the world’s highest cold desert. After crossing the bridge over the Shigar River, we enter one of the most picturesque locations on earth – the Shigar Valley. Known for its legendary history, architectural heritage, and the simplicity and purity of its people, Shigar Valley is truly one of Pakistan's natural treasures.
This stunning valley is a mix of lush oases, glaciers, majestic mountains, lakes, and hot springs. The Shigar Fort, a heritage site built in the early 17th century by Raja Hassan Khan, the 20th Raja of the Amacha Dynasty, is a highlight. Located on the banks of the Shigar River at an elevation of 2,250 meters above sea level, the fort offers a stunning view of the surrounding mountain ranges. Now managed by Serena Hotels, the fort is a beautiful example of architectural diversity, reflecting the region's rich history. Its design, crafted by Kashmiri masons, artisans, and goldsmiths, gives the fort a unique status in the region.
